How Far in Advance Should You Order a Wedding Cake in Austin?
· Bat City Bakes
Short version: book your wedding cake 4 to 8 weeks out, and longer during peak season. But the real answer depends on your date, your guest count, and how in-demand your baker is. Here’s how to think about it.
The ideal timeline
4-8+ weeks before the wedding
This is the sweet spot for most Austin weddings. It gives us time to:
- Talk through your vision, colors, and flavors
- Schedule a tasting (for full wedding orders)
- Reserve your date with a deposit
- Order any special ingredients or decor
Booking in this window means you’re not scrambling, and you have room to make changes before we finalize the design.
2-3 months before (peak season)
Austin’s busiest wedding months, spring and fall, book up fast. If you’re getting married in March through May or September through November, reach out earlier. Popular Saturdays can be claimed months ahead. A great cake artist can only take so many cakes per weekend, and once a date is full, it’s full.
The two dates that fill first
Two things fill up before anything else: Saturdays and holiday weekends. If your wedding lands on either, treat your cake booking as an early to-do, not a last-minute one.
What if you’re planning a smaller celebration?
Not every “I do” needs a towering tiered cake. For elopements, courthouse weddings, and intimate dinners, a heart cake or small custom cake is often perfect, and those can sometimes be arranged on shorter notice. Still, a week or two ahead is always safer than a few days.
How the deposit reserves your date
Here’s the part couples sometimes miss: your date isn’t held until your deposit is in. We require a 50% non-refundable deposit, due within 24 hours of receiving your invoice. If it isn’t received in that window, the date is released to other couples. It’s not about pressure, it’s the only fair way to hold a limited number of slots.
So if you’ve found a baker you love, don’t “think about it” for three weeks. Lock the date.
A quick lead-time cheat sheet
| Celebration | Book it… |
|---|---|
| Elopement / small heart cake | 1-2 weeks ahead (more is better) |
| Standard wedding cake | 4-8 weeks ahead |
| Peak-season or large wedding | 2-3 months ahead |
